The variations in design which appear on the uniforms have evolved to assert the need for a hierarchy, because while it is true, as it is, that women and men on the earth all have equal dignity, it is also true that the ordered and civilised conduct of human society requires diversity of function and thus of responsibility – a diversity which in turn demands the acceptance of a hierarchy in the carrying out of various services.
